facebook chat overview

Sunday, April 6th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

today i started seeing facebook chat, so i took it through some tests. most interestingly, after some sleuthing, i was able to log in to facebook chat directly, in several browsers, without visiting the facebook homepage or profile page. below find some basic screen shots, and an explanation of running facebook chat directly.

what it has

  • basic chat functionality with decent response
  • emoticons
  • predefined chat status (including current facebook status)

what’s missing (or i didn’t find)

  • spell check
  • sound
  • chat history

direct login

the following steps gave me direct access to facebook chat in ie7, firefox 3 (win xp), firefox 2 (mac), and safari 3.1 (mac). it did not work in ie6, firefox 1.5 (win) or unfortunately prism (.9, mac). interestingly, while testing this in various browsers the session timed out. i had probably been away 10 minutes. maybe someone else can do something more interesting from here.

  1. enter “http://www.facebook.com/presence/popout.php?id=[your id]“
  2. log in to facebook
  3. that’s it. you should be in
